Rohingya leader shot in Cox’s Bazar camp

C T Online Desk: A Rohingya leader has sustained bullet injuries in an attack by miscreants over asserting dominance at the Ukhiya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar.

The injured is Mohammad Salim, 28, is the son of Rafiq Uddin, a resident of Block C-2 of Rohingya refugee Camp No-5 in Kutupalong of Ukhiya. He is assigned for the management of the block in the camp as sub-maajhi (assistant community leader).

Additional Deputy Inspector General (ADIG) Sayed Harunur Rashid, commander of 14 Armed Police Battalion (APBn), said that the incident took place at Block-C-2 of Rohingya Camp No-5 Kutupalong of Ukhiya Upazila at 9:30pm on Wednesday.

Quoting locals, the police official said that Salim was supervising the field level work of the workers engaged in voluntary guarding in the camp at night.

At one stage, a group of miscreants numbering 10-15 wearing masks attacked them.

The gang opened fire targeting Salim, leaving him injured.

When an APBn team reached the spot after receiving the information, the miscreants fled the scene, said the ADIG.

Being rescued, Salim was admitted to MSF Hospital adjacent to Kutupalong Camp.

Meanwhile, the duty doctor of the hospital sent him to Cox’s Bazar sadar hospital.

Initially they assumed that the attack was carried out over establishing supremacy in the camp, said the police official adding that APBn is conducting an operation to identify and arrest those involved in the incident.
