C T Online Desk: Four people were killed and 30 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Lohagara upazila of Chittagong on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Rehena Begum, 60, of Patiya upazila in Chattogram; Naimur Rahman Jihad, 21, and Naim, 22, from Jhenaidah; and Monir, 24, from Bhola.
Witnesses said two speeding buses lost control and collided near Four Seasons Restaurant on the Chittagong–Cox’s Bazar highway around 11:30am.
Fire service personnel, highway police and locals carried out rescue operations. At least 30 injured passengers were taken to different hospitals.
Dr Tashfik Ahmed, Junior Consultant in the Orthopaedics Department at Lohagara Upazila Health Complex, said seven injured victims were brought to the trauma centre, where one was declared dead on arrival. The remaining patients were sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Salauddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Dohazari Highway Police Station, said the accident caused a long traffic jam on the highway, which was later brought under control.
The accident cast a shadow of grief over the area, while locals demanded stricter measures to curb reckless driving on highways.
