Commonwealth Chief Urges Equal Electoral Opportunity

C T Online Desk: Shakhawat Sabbir | Special Correspondent : Commonwealth Secretary-General Sharlie Botchway has discussed ensuring a level playing field in Bangladesh’s upcoming national election during a meeting with the interim government’s Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul on Monday.

During the talks, held in Dhaka, the Secretary-General emphasized the importance of strengthening human rights protections and guaranteeing equal opportunities for all political actors ahead of the polls.

In a post shared on Facebook, Botchway described the meeting as “productive,” noting that the discussion covered key issues related to human rights and conducting a credible, inclusive election. She reiterated that the Commonwealth stands ready to support Bangladesh’s reform initiatives and efforts toward national unity, in line with the values upheld in the Commonwealth Charter.

Earlier in the day, the Secretary-General also met Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus and Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain as part of her four-day visit aimed at engaging with political leaders, the interim administration, and civil society ahead of the February 2026 national elections.
