JUCSU polls: Teacher dies while performing duties

A teacher at the Jahangirnagar University died on her way to the hospital after she fell ill while participating in the vote-counting process in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and hall union elections.

Shafiqul Islam, the duty manager of Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, confirmed her death at 9:50 am on Friday (12 September).

The deceased, Jannatul Ferdous, 29, was an assistant professor at the Department of Fine Arts at Jahangirnagar University. She was working as a polling officer at Pritilata Hall during the JUCSU elections.

Enam Medical College Hospital’s duty manager Shafiqul Islam said that Jannatul Ferdous was brought dead to the hospital. The university authorities later took away the body.

University Proctor and Member Secretary of the Election Commission, Professor AKM Rashidul Alam said, “It was not possible to complete the counting of votes in all the halls as everyone was tired at night and there were no polling agents. The counting of votes in Pritilata Hall will be done this morning. So she came to the university along with other colleagues. But she fell at the door of the Senate Hall. Later, she was taken to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where duty doctors declared her dead.”
