C T Online Desk: The National Citizen Party (NCP) has announced its central convening committee, comprising 151 members, with a tenure of one year.
This was confirmed through a notification signed by NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain on Saturday. He later reiterated this information on his Facebook profile.
The notification said that in 2024, through an uprising led by students and the public, the citizens of Bangladesh were freed from a fascist regime. “However, the sole demand of the uprising declared at the Shaheed Minar—the complete abolition of the fascist system and the establishment of a new political order—has yet to be fulfilled.”
The notification further detailed the historical journey of the people of this region, who have continually asserted themselves as a political community. As part of the nearly 200-year-long anti-colonial struggle, the Pakistan Movement led to the achievement of an independent state in 1947, it added.
“However, the Pakistani state failed to uphold and realize the social, political, and economic aspirations of the people of this land. Driven by the desire for liberation, the people of this region achieved independence from Pakistani rulers through the Liberation War of 1971.
“However, the state structure of Bangladesh, established through the Mujibist constitution of 1972, paved the way for undemocratic, authoritarian, and fascist rule. Consequently, the citizens of this country have, at various points in history, fallen victim to Baksal, autocracy, and, most recently, fascism.
“In this context, to eliminate all elements and structures of fascism from Bangladesh’s state framework and to realize the people’s aspirations for freedom, a new political settlement needs to be implemented. Under the leadership of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the initiative of the National Citizen Committee, the formation of a new political party named the National Citizen Party is announced.”
Mim Akter, the sister of martyr Ismail from the July uprising, declared Nahid Islam as the convenor and Akhtar Hossain as the member secretary of the National Citizen Party during a rally on Friday.
“The (partial) convening committee will, within the next year, develop the party’s constitution and manifesto, implement programs, and oversee organizational expansion activities.”
