C T Online Desk: The High Court has granted bail to Chumki Karan, the convicted wife of dismissed Teknaf police station officer-in-charge Pradeep Kumar Das, in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain issued the order on Sunday.
Barristers Abdullah Al Mamun and Khaza Tanvir Ahmed, who represented Chumki in court, said there were no further legal barriers to her release.
Major (Retd) Sinha Mohammed Rashed Khan was fatally shot by police at a Baharchhara checkpoint in Teknaf on July 31, 2020.
In the murder trial, Pradeep and another policeman were sentenced to death, while six others received life imprisonment on January 31, 2022.
Previously, on August 23, 2020, then-ACC assistant director Md Riaz Uddin filed a case accusing Pradeep and Chumki of illegally amassing wealth amounting to over Tk3.95 crore, concealing asset information and money laundering.
After investigation, adjustments were made to the allegations’ monetary value.
On July 28, 2021, the ACC submitted its charge sheet, detailing that Chumki had concealed information on assets worth over Tk49.58 lakh and unlawfully acquired and transferred assets to the tune of over Tk2.35 crore.
On July 27, 2022, Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Munshi Abdul Majid sentenced Pradeep to 20 years in prison and Chumki to 21 years.
They were convicted under various provisions of the ACC Act, 2004 and the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012, which included additional fines and subsidiary penalties.
Chumki had been on the run since the start of the trial but surrendered on the final day of witness testimony. She has been in custody since her surrender.
