C T Online Desk: At least seven people have died and many are missing in the deteriorating flood in Sherpur triggered by continuous rain and upstream torrents.
So far, more than 200 villages in 28 unions across five upazilas of Sherpur have been flooded, leaving over 150,000 people stranded.
The water levels of various rivers in the district have risen, and new areas are being inundated.
Authorities are concerned about extensive damage to agriculture and crops.
Local authorities, along with volunteer organizations and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), are working to rescue the flood-affected people in Sherpur.
From Saturday morning members of the Bangladesh Army have also joined the rescue efforts.
Meanwhile, from Saturday morning, six more unions in Sherpur Sadar and Nokla upazilas have been submerged by floodwaters.
The Moharshi, Someshwari, Chellakhali, Bhogai, and Mirgi rivers in Sherpur are flowing above the danger level, leading to a significant deterioration of the overall flood situation in the district.
Nokla police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Habibur Rahman said: “One person died in Nokla on Saturday night. Additionally, five people died in Nalitabari and one in Jhinaigati upazila due to the flood.”
Jhinaigati Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ashraful Alam said: “We have been successful in rescuing the flood-affected people. Many have been taken to shelters, where arrangements for clean water and dry food are being made. About 70 to 80% of the upazila has been submerged.”
The secondary schools in Sherpur that are being used as shelters have been declared closed.
Regarding this, District Education Officer Md Rezaian said: “The schools that are functioning as shelters will remain closed for the next few days, while regular classes will continue in areas where there is no water. The number of schools that are closed will be known this Sunday afternoon.”
