C T Online Desk: The law providing special security to the family members of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been repealed.
On Monday, the president issued the “Father of the Nation Family Members’ Security (Abolishment) Ordinance, 2024,” which abolishes the “Father of the Nation Family Members’ Security Act, 2009.”
The ordinance draft was approved by the advisory council on August 29.
The Advisory Council’s approval noted that the 2009 Act was implemented under the previous government’s decision, with a gazette issued on May 15, 2015, granting special security and privileges exclusively to one family, creating a clear disparity.
Following the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the current interim government has committed to eliminating all forms of discrimination.
Notably, on August 25, a writ petition was filed in the High Court challenging the legality of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Family Members Security Act as well as the Special Security Force Act, 2021.
The petition was filed by Mohammad Moniruzzaman, a Supreme Court lawyer and assistant secretary general of the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS). The court has not yet held a hearing on the matter.
