Students launch Jatiya Nagorik Committee to champion goals of July movement

C T Online Desk: Students have unveiled a 55-member Jatiya Nagorik Committee, which aims to fulfil the dream of building a society free from discrimination.

Nasir Uddin Patwari has been made as the convener, while Akhter Hossain as the member secretary and Samanta Sharmin as the spokesperson of the Committee.

Nasiruddin has been a member of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s liaison committee while Akhter Hossain, an ex-DUCSU secretary for social welfare, and Samanta Sharmin, a graduate of Dhaka University’s fine arts department, played a crucial role during the student-led popular uprising.

According to a statement issued to journalists, Nasir Uddin Patwari announced the formation of the committee at Central Shaheed Minar around 5:15pm on Sunday.

This platform is expected to act as pressure group to restructure the state and eradicate the fascist political system.

“The supreme sacrifices of hundreds of martyrs and participation of people have toppled the Sheikh Hasina-led government. But the fascist system still exists and is trying to ruin the spirit of the uprising. To ensure a new political settlement for the wellbeing of the countrymen, we have formed the Jatiya Nagorik Committee,” reads the statement.

Some primary objectives of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee include to arouse people’s passion for democracy and ignite the spirit of popular uprising, to ensure justice for the martyrs during the uprising, to create scopes for accountability, to arrange policy discussions between the public and policymaking stakeholders, to rewrite the constitution discussing the policy matters with the masses of grassroots levels, and to arrange new political settlement.
