C T Online Desk: Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Thursday said that Bangladesh Police has a unique contribution in the liberation war.
Not only in the War of Liberation, the police have achieved enviable success in maintaining law and order, militancy and terrorism in the country.
The IGP was addressing at the opening ceremony of the former IGP Bir Muktijodha Abdul Khalek Art Gallery organised by the Bangladesh Police Liberation War Museum at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh Police Lines on Thursday.
Emeritus Prof Hashem Khan of Dhaka University Fine Arts Faculty was present as the main speaker in the event, chaired by Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Habibur Rahman.
Additional IG (Administration) Kamrul Ahsan, Additional IG of Special Branch Monirul Islam were present as Special guest in the programme.
The chief of Bangladesh Police said that after the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975, attempts were made to distort the history of the liberation war in various ways. But with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s initiative, various initiatives were taken to preserve the correct history of the Liberation War. One of its unique efforts is the establishment of the Bangladesh Police Liberation War Museum.
He said we have taken initiatives to collect and preserve various memorials for the Liberation War Museum. Anyone can give us reliable information about freedom war in this collection.
Referring to the background of naming the art gallery after the former IGP valiant freedom fighter Abdul Khalek, the IGP said he was working at the Police Academy at that time.
From there, scorning his own comforts for the freedom of the motherland, knowing that his family might be in danger, he went to India and actively played an important role in the cause of the freedom struggle. His family suffered a lot at that time and sacrificed for the nation, he added.
Prof Hashem Khan said that the Bengali policemen with only ‘three not three’ rifles prevented the Pakistani forces equipped with modern weapons. Armed with mortars, tanks and armored vehicles, the Pakistani forces did not expect to be confronted by ‘three not three’ rifles.
Speaking about the inauguration of the former IGP Abdul Khalek Art Gallery, he said that art galleries have a very important role in enriching a nation.
Among others, freedom fighter Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, Vir Bikram, former IGP freedom fighter Abdul Khalek’s wife Selina Khalek spoke on the occasion. Director of Bangladesh Police Liberation War Museum Muhammad Talebur Rahman delivered the welcome speech.
