C T Online Desk: At least two people were killed in Bhola and Satkhira due to the impact of cyclone Remal, which now lies over Khulna-Satkhira on Monday.
In Bhola, a 55-year-old woman was killed around 4am when her house collapsed due to the heavy wind and rain on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Maneja Khatun, a resident of Lalmohan upazila of the district.
Her husband, Abdul Kader, and her five-year-old grandchild managed to escape the house during the incident.
SM Mahbub-ul-Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Lalmohan Police Station, said: “We have received information that a woman died due to her house collapsing in the cyclone. We did not get any details yet.”
In Satkhira, a 72-year-old man died while going to a shelter during a storm caused by cyclone Remal.
The deceased has been identified as Shawkat Ali Morol. He was a resident of Napitkhali village under Gabura union of the upazila.
Masudul Alam, chairman of Gabura Union Parishad said he stumbled on the road and suffered a heart attack around 7pm.
Cyclone Remal, which began making landfall on Bangladesh’s coast on Sunday night, has moved northwards inland and now lies over Khulna-Satkhira, according to the weather office.
Meteorologist Bazlur Rahman said on Monday morning that the cyclone’s centre currently lies over Khulna-Satkhira and will take another 2-3 hours to fully pass.
The maximum sustained wind speed within 64km of the cyclone’s centre is about 90kmph, with gusts rising to 120kmph, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) stated in its special bulletin No 18.
