Traffic movement through the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel beneath the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram will remain suspended for 12 hours from 6pm on Sunday to ward off risk as the severe cyclonic storm Remal is set to make landfall on the southern coasts of Bangladesh and parts of India by midnight today.
Md Nasir Uddin, the tunnel’s assistant engineer, told the Daily Sun that the tunnel would remain closed until 6am on Monday.
He said the floodgate of the architectural marvel would remain shut during the period to avert risk.
The engineer, however, informed that the tunnel is equipped enough to protect against natural disasters, including tidal surges.
