C T Online Desk: The body of a crew member, who had gone missing after a fishing vessel sank in the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong, was recovered early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, chief officer of the vessel.
A team of river police recovered his body from the river around 3:30am, said Mohammad Ekram Ullah, officer-in-charge of Sadarghat River police station.
Meanwhile, six more people still remain missing.
The missing are the vessel’s Second Engineer Jahirul Islam, Captain Faruk Bin Abdullah, Greaser Prodip Chowdhury, Fishing Master Md Jahir Uddin, Dock Member Rahmat Mia and name of another missing member could not be known.
The accident happened around 1:30am on Wednesday when the vessel FB Magferat carrying 21 people was trying to dock for maintenance at Ichhanagar village under Karnaphuli upazila.
Though 14 people including the chief engineer managed to swim to the shore soon after the vessel capsized, seven crew members including the captain went missing.
Those who were rescued are the vessel’s chief engineer Mohammad Solaiman, Assistant Engineer Aslam, Greaser Md Monir, sailors Bashar, Anwar, Rakib, Bachhu and Saidul, and the identity of another could not be known.
Meanwhile, another staff of the vessel, who was rescued immediately after the incident, died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital while undergoing treatment.
Besides, an unidentified body was recovered from the river around 10am. It was not confirmed immediately whether he died in the vessel capsize incident.
Police said that a joint team of river police, fire service and civil defense is conducting a rescue operation.
