Chaktai-K’ganj traders afraid of new moon tide

C T Online Desk: There was no rainfall during the last full moon tide. However, water seeps into many shops, houses and warehouses in Chaktai-Khatunganj.

Due to the fact that it happened in the afternoon, the amount of damage is comparatively less. Although there is no rain, now is the monsoon season. If it rains during the tide on the next new moon night, the water level will increase. Water resistant walls in front of businesses and homes will no longer work. Traders of Chaktai-Khatunganj, one of the country’s consumer goods wholesale markets, are worried.

While talking to several businessmen, they said that the businessmen of Chaktai-Khatunganj were victims of flooding in 2017. At that time raw materials worth hundreds of crores of rupees were lost in water. Some have lost billions of rupees due to the spoilage of water-soaked products. Then the water resistant walls built in front of each shop were raised higher. Later, digging of Chaktai Canal and Rajakhali Canal and construction of sluice gate at the mouth of the canal started. The traders are hopeful. But the work, which was going on at a very fast pace, was not completed even in a few years. The message they received in the last full moon tide is causing fear among them for the coming new moon tide.
