Health Minister highlights successful management of pandemic crisis in Bangladesh

C T Online Desk: The five members delegation headed by Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque attended the G77 plus China Summit held in Havana, Cuba which was attended by more than 1,300 participants from 116 nations and 12 organisations and agencies of the United Nations (UN) system.

The Summit held on Sept 15-16 in Havana was also attended by 31 Heads of State/Government, 12 Vice-Presidents, Cabinet Ministers and other high-level government representatives from the respective member countries of G77 plus China. Cuban President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, presided over the summit as the Chair of G77 plus China.

During the two-day summit, member states delivered country statements during debate sessions. Prior to the summit, delegations had agreed to adopt a political declaration with 47 topics through a transparent and inclusive intergovernmental negotiation process.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque in his country statement highlighted the successful management of the pandemic crisis by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He stressed the importance of obtaining timely vaccines and associated equipment from concerned countries. He also mentioned that management of Pandemic was unknown and hence, initial days of Pandemic management was challenging.

Keeping this experience ahead, sharing of technological knowledge in all sectors between and among the developed and developing countries had to be ensured.

He reiterated that technological advancement should not be allowed as monopoly by the developed nations only, rather the quick and timely share of knowledge with all the countries, particularly between developed and developing nations had huge significance to face challenges posed by the climate change impacts.

He also said that developed nations must compensate by giving not only financial support, but also sharing technological knowledge that should be open for the developing nations.

The summit adopted 47-article Havana Final Declaration under the theme “Current Development Challenges: Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation,” in the second day.In closing remarks, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz expressed gratitude to all the delegates on behalf of the Cuban people and government.

On the sidelines of the summit, the Head of Bangladesh Delegation held discussions with counterparts from Yemen, Libya, Cuba, and the UN Secretary for Climate Change to address bilateral issues of mutual interest.
