C T Online Desk: Dhaka-Chittagong direct oil transport project is not being completed on schedule. This project costing more than 3000 crore taka has only one and a half month remaining. But still more than 40% work is left.
In this situation, the stakeholders are making proposals to extend the duration of this project, which is one of the biggest in the energy sector. Project officials say that due to land acquisition complications, heavy monsoon rains, natural calamities caused by cyclone ‘Sitrang’, pipeline laying work could not be completed as planned. Due to the instability caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, some parts of the project did not reach the country. All in all, they could not finish the work on time.
The project of direct fuel oil transportation from Patenga in Chittagong to Narayanganj in Dhaka was approved by Ecnec on October 9, 2018. Then its term is considered till December 2020. As the work was not completed on time, the duration of the project was extended till December 2022. Even after that, due to the fear that the work will not be completed, the period is being extended once more.
The project, taken up by Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), is being implemented under the supervision of Army’s 24th Engineer Construction Brigade. On behalf of the army, project director Colonel Md. Jahangir Hossain told the media that although the work is supposed to be completed in December, it is not happening. Again we are making proposals to extend the duration of the project.
