C T Online Desk: Due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal, the Laboni and Sugandha beach points in Cox’s Bazar have been severely eroded.
Kabir Bin Anwar, senior secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, inspected the erosion on Friday afternoon.
He said that authorities have taken immediate temporary measures to safe guard the beach points by using geo bags filled with sand. A high embankment is needed here.”
“We have already submitted a project worth Tk3,140 crore to Executive Committee of the National Economic Council. Perhaps Cox’s Bazar can be saved from erosion after establishing an embankment between Nazirertek and Marine Drive,” he added.
Earlier in the morning, Kabir Bin Anwar and other administrative officials visited Kobita Chottor, Laboni and Sugandha beach points.
Cox’s Bazar District Commissioner Md Mamunur Rashid, Additional District Magistrate Md Abu Sufian, Executive Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board Dr Tanzir Saif Ahmed, were also present.
The world’s longest Cox’s Bazar beach is losing its beauty due to this erosion at several points.
Meanwhile, 15 low-lying areas of coastal districts and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by tidal surges, the Met Office reported.
The districts are Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barisal, Lakshmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar.
