C T Online Desk: Sarwar Jahan Jewel Mymensingh : The re-excavation work of the historic Dharer Canal, also known as Bailor Canal, located in Kanhar and Darirampur areas of Bailor Union in Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh, was inspected. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formally inaugurated the re-excavation work of the canal.
It is worth noting that the then President Shaheed Ziaur Rahman dug this canal in 1979. After almost 47 years, the re-dug work of the canal has started under the initiative of his son, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Trishal Upazila Executive Officer Arafat Siddiqui, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Mohammad Saiful Islam, Upazila Engineer Jubayet Hossain, Upazila Agriculture Officer Hammim Jahan and local journalists inspected the canal re-excavation work today, June 25 at noon.
During the inspection, officials said that the canal is being re-excavated for a total length of 3100 meters. The canal is being excavated to a width of 10 feet at the bottom, 20 feet at the top and 5 feet deep from the bottom. This will increase the water holding capacity and reduce the problem of waterlogging during the monsoon.
Upazila Executive Officer Arafat Siddiqui said, there are plans to build an entertainment center around the canal in the future. In addition, initiatives will be taken to plant trees on both sides of the canal. This will further enhance the environment and natural beauty of the area.
Upazila Project Implementation Officer Mohammad Saiful Islam said that the re-excavation work of the canal is already nearing completion. The target has been set to complete the work by June 30.
Locals believe that the re-excavation of the canal will alleviate waterlogging in the area, preserve the natural balance, and have a positive impact on the local economy through fish farming. There is excitement among the locals as the canal has come back to life after a long time.
