3  out of 5 units of Kaptai Power Station closed

C T Online Desk: At present 2 out of 5 units of Kaptai Power Station are in operation for power generation. The remaining 3 units are closed. At present 85 MW electricity is being generated from 2 units. According to the power station sources, all the electricity generated is being transmitted to the national grid. At present a total of 60 MW power is being generated at the rate of 35 MW from Units 2 and 3 between the two units in operation.

Kaptai  Hydro Power Station Superintending  Engineer ATM Abduzzah admitted the shortage of water in Kaptai Lake on Saturday and said that according to the rule curve, Kaptai Lake should have 6.48 feet  sea level (MSL) water at the moment. But the lake now has 60 feet of MSL water. Due to lack of water in the lake, it is not possible to start all the units of the power plant at the same time. According to the control room sources of Kaptai Power Station, the water level in the lake is declining every day.

Besides, the water level of the lake is decreasing day by day due to prolonged drought. Moreover, thousands of families living on the banks of Kaptai Lake are fetching water from the lake with the help of motors. A large amount of lake water is also being used for irrigation. As a result of so much use, the water of the lake is constantly decreasing. But not a single drop of water is being collected in the lake from any source. The control room also expressed concern that if this continues, another unit of the power plant may have to be shut down in a very short time, a sources of PDB said.
