Preparing for Elections, a Historic Moment for the Nation: Dr. Yunus

C T Online Desk: Shakhawat Sabbir |Special Correspondent : Chief Adviser of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has said that Bangladesh is preparing for a national election that will mark “a historic moment for the nation.”

He made the remark on Wednesday (November 12) during a meeting with a seven-member Canadian parliamentary delegation at the state guesthouse Jamuna, led by Senator Salma Ataullahjan.

Dr. Yunus briefed the delegation on the country’s reform process and upcoming elections, describing the current period as a “historic transformation driven by youth-led movements.”

Both sides discussed strengthening bilateral trade and cooperation in addressing the Rohingya crisis. Dr. Yunus expressed gratitude to Canada for its long-standing humanitarian support, saying, “Repatriation is the only sustainable solution for the 1.2 million Rohingya living here.”

Senator Ataullahjan reaffirmed Canada’s continued commitment to resolving the Rohingya crisis, calling it a “serious humanitarian concern.”

Other delegates included MPs Salma Zahid, Sameer Zuberi, Mahmuda Khan, Masum Mahbub, Ahmad Atiya, and Usama Khan. The meeting also discussed expanding trade and investment in Bangladesh’s apparel and agriculture sectors.

National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman and Senior Secretary for SDG Affairs Lamia Morshed were present.
