Preparations underway to hold elections in February: CEC

C T Online Desk: The PR method is not included in the constitution. Political discussions are still ongoing about it, he says

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has said that all necessary preparations are being made to complete the national elections in February, ahead of the upcoming Ramadan.

The final voter list will be published within the next two weeks, while hearings on constituency demarcation will continue until next week. Work is also ongoing to select polling centers.

He made these remarks at 10 am on Saturday during a views-exchange meeting with election officials of the Rajshahi region at the Regional Public Administration Training Center, ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Elections.

The CEC warned, “Those who dream of capturing polling centers will find their dreams turning into nightmares. They will face a strong response. There will be no chance of winning by occupying centers. If any attempt is made to seize a polling center, voting at that center will be cancelled entirely.”

He further stated that election officials who were previously involved in vote rigging will not be included in the election process this time. “Until justice is completed, the Awami League will not be allowed to participate in the election,” he added.

The CEC said law and order has improved and will continue to improve further as the election approaches. Drives will be carried out to seize illegal arms before voting, as “no one will be able to win the election through muscle power.”

Regarding the proportional representation (PR) system, he said, “The PR method is not included in the constitution. Political discussions are still ongoing about it.”
