C T Online Desk: Two people were killed, and two others were injured in an indiscriminate shooting attack on a private car by assailants in Chattogram city.
The attack took place at around 2:45am on Saturday near the entrance of Bakalia Access Road in Chandgaon under Chawkbazar police station.
The deceased were identified as Bakhtiar Uddin Manik and Md Abdullah, both estimated to be between 30 and 35 years old, according to the police.
Manik was a resident of Rangunia Upazila, while Abdullah hailed from Hathazari Upazila. Manik was reportedly driving the private car at the time of the attack.
The injured, identified as Robin and Hridoy, have been admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Sources revealed that 4-5 motorcycles, each carrying two armed assailants, chased the private car from Rajakhali Bridge towards the Access Road. The attackers brandished weapons and fired incessantly while in pursuit, causing panic among the passengers who were heard screaming for help.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahidul Kabir of Chawkbazar police station confirmed that two passengers were killed while two others sustained injuries from the gunfire.
According to sources, the attack may have been linked to a longstanding gang rivalry between top Chattogram gangster Sajjad Hossain, alias Chhoto Sajjad, and his rival Sarwar Hossain Babla’s group. Sajjad was arrested in Dhaka on 15 March.
It is suspected that the attack targeted a follower of Babla, who had allegedly tipped off the police about Sajjad’s whereabouts. However, law enforcement officials have declined to comment further until the investigation is complete.
