C T Online Desk: Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has said that it is possible to increase awareness on prevention of Tuberculosis (TB) by joint efforts of members of parliament (MPs) and icddr,b.
She made the remark while addressing an event titled ‘World TB Day – Invest to End TB, Save Lives’ at the LD Hall of the Parliament Members’ Club in the Parliament Building in the capital jointly organised by USAID and icddr,b.
MPs can enhance their campaign in their respective constituencies on organisations which are providing services for the prevention of TB. The impact of TB will be alleviated largely by spreading awareness and necessary guidelines among the people in remote areas, the Speaker said.
Dr Shirin Sharmin said, “ The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has set up community clinics and union health centers to provide quality healthcare to the poor and marginalised people. The government has been able to treat many incurable diseases successfully. Prevention of TB would be possible with the cooperation and awareness of all.”
“Currently, MPs are working in remote areas on prevention of maternal mortality, prevention of infant mortality, prevention of child marriage, tackling the adverse effects of climate change. MPs are already engaged in working to prevent tobacco use. Lawmakers will also work extensively to prevent TB in the future,” she added.
Helen LaFave, Deputy Chief of Mission at U.S. Embassy in Bangladesh, Dr. AFM Ruhul Haque MP and Dr. Pran Gopal Dutt MP also spoke on the occasion presided over by Dr. Tahmid Ahmed, Executive Director, icddr,b.
