Tourists and locals thrilled as ICC trophy visits Cox’s Bazar

C T Online Desk: The ICC Champions Trophy was showcased at Cox’s Bazar Beach, drawing immense enthusiasm from spectators.

From 10am to 3pm on Wednesday, the trophy was open for public viewing at Laboni Beach.

As part of its world tour, the trophy arrived in Bangladesh, with its first stop being the coastal city of Cox’s Bazar.

The trophy, which embarked on its global journey earlier, was brought to Cox’s Bazar this morning as per the pre-scheduled program.

Around 10:30am, the Champions Trophy was unveiled to the public at the Laboni Point of the beach for a photo session.

Visitors, including tourists and locals, rushed to the venue to capture memorable moments, with many taking selfies and group photos. Cricket enthusiasts, in particular, thronged to catch a glimpse of the ICC’s coveted prize, creating a festive atmosphere at the beach.

A special stage was erected in the sand in front of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)-operated ‘Shimanto Shommelon Kendra Urme’ to display the trophy. Many opined that this event added a new dimension to tourism in Cox’s Bazar.

Strict security measures were in place to ensure the event ran smoothly. Special teams from RAB, police, and intelligence agencies were deployed.

Although the crowd peaked within the first hour and a half, it gradually thinned out.

One spectator said: “This trophy isn’t just a golden cup; it symbolises the dream of Bangladesh achieving success in world cricket. It will inspire our younger generation.”

Fahim Chowdhury, a young tourist from Dhaka, said: “I’ve never been this close to a World Cup trophy before. Seeing the ICC Champions Trophy up close and taking photos is truly a privilege.”

Organizers believe this initiative has invigorated Cox’s Bazar’s tourism sector, apart from delighting cricket enthusiasts.

Selim Nawaz, general secretary of the Hotel-Motel and Guest House Owners’ Association, commented: “The ICC trophy’s display on the beach has brought significant attention to Cox’s Bazar as a prime travel destination.”

The ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place in Pakistan in 2025. Due to India’s reluctance to travel to Pakistan, the tournament will follow a hybrid model.

Eight teams, including hosts Pakistan, India, Australia, New Zealand, England, South Africa, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, will compete in this tournament.

The trophy arrived in Bangladesh visiting Pakistan and Afghanistan. Dubai-based multinational logistics company DP World is managing the trophy’s world tour.

Weighing 3.1kg, the stunning trophy will be displayed at Laboni Point in Cox’s Bazar until 3pm on Wednesday, after which it will be taken to Dhaka.

On Thursday, it will be on display at Bashundhara City Shopping Complex from 11am to 8pm, offering fans another opportunity to take photos.

On Friday, the trophy will be showcased at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, where national men’s and women’s cricket teams, former players, officials, organizers, sponsors, and media personnel will have access to it.

From Bangladesh, the trophy will travel to South Africa, followed by Australia, New Zealand, England, India, and finally, the host nation, Pakistan.
