BGB urges preventing lethal force on civilians, BSF assures support

C T Online Desk: The battalion commanders of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Border Security Force (BSF) reached agreements on several key issues, emphasizing a spirit of cooperation and friendship between BGB and BSF.

Kushtia Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Mahbub Murshed Rahman confirmed the details on Monday night.

The meeting, which began at 3:30pm, lasted for over an hour and took place at the Udaynagar BOP under Kushtia Battalion (BGB-47), near the 146 Battalion BSF’s Jalangi BSF camp (within India).

The meeting was led by Lieutenant Colonel Md Mahbub Murshed Rahman of BGB from the Bangladeshi side and Sub-Commander Monhar Lal from BSF on the Indian side.

The Kushtia Battalion commander (BGB-47) requested that lethal weapons or firing not be used on Bangladeshi civilians at the border under any circumstances. The BSF representative agreed to this request.

Additionally, BSF assured that strict measures would be taken to prevent the entry of narcotics, contraband goods, and illegal weapons from India into Bangladesh.

The Kushtia BGB-47 Battalion commander also raised concerns about the increased BSF presence at the border.

In response, the BSF commander confirmed that the increase in personnel was part of their routine operations, mainly to strengthen the prevention of drug smuggling and other illegal activities.

It also includes preparations for the installation of barbed wire at a 150-yard distance from the zero line inside India in areas lacking fencing.

Regarding the construction of residential buildings within 150 yards of the border due to erosion of the Padma river near Atarpur village, the BSF representative requested that no permanent structures be built in the future.

The Kushtia BGB-47 Battalion commander assured that necessary measures would be taken based on higher authorities’ instructions, in line with the existing land conditions.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Mahbub Murshed Rahman of Kushtia Battalion emphasized the importance of stronger communication and coordination between the company/BOP commanders of both BGB and BSF.
