Disaster management adviser praises Qatar Charity’s Rohingya support scheme

C T Online Desk: Disaster management and relief adviser Faruk E Azam has praised the humanitarian activities of international NGO Qatar Charity in supporting the Rohingya refugees of Bhasan Char.

The adviser recently visited the Bhasan Char Island, accompanied by key ministry officials and representatives from international organisations, to assess the humanitarian efforts being taken for Rohingya refugees.

During his visit, he highlighted the impactful initiatives led by Qatar Charity in supporting this vulnerable population, said a press release issued by its Dhaka office on Tuesday.

Faruk-e-Azam observed Qatar Charity’s humanitarian activities, particularly its livelihood programmes designed to empower refugees to meet their daily needs. He emphasised the importance of connecting these initiatives with local markets to enhance economic opportunities for participants.

The visit also included the adviser’s participation in a “school uniform distribution program” for the refugee children organised by Qatar Charity.

The delegation included Md Kamrul Hasan, secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief; Mr. Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, additional secretary as well as Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner; and Md Mahfuzar Rahman, additional refugee relief and repatriation commissioner (Deputy Secretary) for Bhasan Char. Other attendees included local officials from Hatiya Upazila and representatives from UNHCR and UNICEF.

Faruk-e-Azam’s visit underscored the collaborative efforts by the Bangladeshi government and humanitarian organisations to improve the lives of Rohingya refugees in Bhasan Char. The Ministry remains committed to fostering partnerships that promote sustainable development and support for these communities, it said in a statement.

Notably, Qatar Charity has long been working to support Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. Over the past five years, Qatar Charity’s projects and aid benefitted more than 1.5 million refugees living in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char Island.
