BNP leader calls student-led uprising a romantic revolution

C T Online Desk: BNP Standing Committee member Dr Moyeen Khan has described the recent student-led mass uprising as a “romantic revolution,” saying that unity, equality, and some divisions have emerged among the protesters in the past two and a half months.

He said this on Saturday at the National Press Club’s Abdus Salam Hall during a memorial meeting commemorating the 12th death anniversary of national leader Oli Ahad.

The event, organized by the Democratic League (DL) and the Oli Ahad Memorial Society, gathered prominent leaders and activists.

Dr Moyeen Khan said: “I believe that the student-led uprising in Bangladesh’s history represents a romantic revolution. This is because, over the past two and a half months, we have witnessed both division and unity among the protesters, who have stood in solidarity against the government.”

Reflecting on the movement, he added: “The way people have sacrificed their lives and fought for true liberation, I feel we are continuing the legacy of this romantic revolution in Bangladesh.”

Other prominent speakers at the event also voiced their concerns. Mahmudur Rahman Manna, president of Nagorik Oikya, said: “The people of this country have fought and defeated autocracy. The nation is in decay, and reforms are necessary to move forward.”

Saiful Haque, general secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party, said: “Bangladesh’s politics will not revert to past vendettas. This nation will no longer bow to imperialists, and we must embrace the victory of the people’s uprising.”

Zonayed Saki, chief coordinator of Ganasanghati Andolon, highlighted Oli Ahad’s contributions to Bangladesh’s political landscape, calling him an “important figure whose contributions will always be remembered.”

He said: “Although the fascist government has fallen, the fascist system remains. We must dismantle this system to ensure true freedom.”
