Singer, composer Shujeo Shyam no more

C T Online Desk: Shujeo Shyam, a renowned singer, composer and music director, has passed away.

He breathed his last at around 3am on Friday, while receiving treatment at a hospital in the capital.

Shujeo Shyam’s daughter, Rupa Manjuri Shyam (Liza), confirmed the matter.

She said: “Father had been battling cancer since 2018 and was undergoing treatment. A pacemaker was implanted in his heart this June. Overall, he was doing well. But on September 24, he fell ill again and was admitted to PG Hospital (Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University). He could not be brought back this time and has left us.”

Rupa also mentioned that the family has yet to decide on the next steps regarding his death.

In 1971, Shujeo Shyam composed the last song for Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, and after the surrender of the Pakistani forces, he composed the first victory song.

The song, written by lyricist Shahidul Amin, titled “Bijoy Nishan Urchhe Oi” was composed and directed by Shujeo Shyam, with Ajit Roy as the lead vocalist.

Among the other notable songs composed by Shujeo Shyam are “Rokto Diye Naam Likhhechi,” “Rokto Chai Rokto Chai,” “Aha Dhonno Amar Janmobhumi,” “Aayre Chashi Mojur Kuli,” “Muktir Ek-ei Pot Shongram,” and “Shon Re Tora Shon.”

Shujeo Shyam received numerous national awards for his contributions to music, including the prestigious Ekushey Padak in 2018.
