Nahid: Sheikh Mujib certainly not father of the nation

C T Online Desk: Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Nahid Islam has said that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is not the father of the nation as portrayed by Awami League. Rather, he said there are many individuals who played significant roles in this land.

He made the statement on Wednesday while speaking on the interim government’s decision to cancel eight national holidays including the March 7.

Nahid said that the Awami League had imposed their party days as national days.

In response to questions from journalists, the adviser said that the Awami League had distorted history.

“Even Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been spoiled by the Awami League. The way his statues are being worshipped in Bangladesh, it has become part of a fascist ideology. We cannot allow such fascist tendencies in the government formed through a mass uprising or in the new Bangladesh,” he added.

He further added: “We are not erasing March 7 from history. We are not denying Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s significance in history. What the Awami League did will be re-written impartially. There is a political agenda behind commemorating days as national days, and this cannot continue under the government formed by a mass uprising. This practice will not continue in the new Bangladesh.”

Referring to 1947, 1952, and 1971, he emphasized that many contributed and that there isn’t just one founding father; there are many founding fathers.

He concluded by saying that March 7 is an important day, but it does not hold the level of significance required to be a national day.

The Awami League has ruined many such days. “We are only abolishing the national days that were imposed in a fascist manner by the Awami League.”
