Ganabhaban’s doors are open; want to sit with the students: PM Hasina

C T Online Desk: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina invites quota reform protesters for dialogue at Ganabhaban.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed her willingness to meet and listen to the demands of the quota reform protesters, stating that the doors of the Ganabhaban are open for dialogue.

“The door of Ganabhaban is open. I want to sit with the agitating students of the movement and listen to them. I want no conflict,” she said during a meeting with the central leaders of the Peshajibi Somonnoy Parishad at the Ganabhaban on Saturday.

She also asked the authorities concerned to release the detained general students.

This announcement comes amid ongoing protests and demands for justice for the killed and injured people during the quota reform movement.

During the same meeting, the Prime Minister declared the cancellation of the proposed pension system for universities, autonomous institutions, and government entities.

On Friday night, the Prime Minister convened an emergency meeting at Ganabhaban and assigned three party leaders to sit with the coordinators of the ongoing student movement.

The leaders tasked with this responsibility are Awami League Presidium Member Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, and Krishibid AFM Bahauddin Nasim.

The protesters, however, rejected the dialogue proposal.

“We have no plans to sit with the government for discussions,” Nahid Islam, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, told the reporters.

He said, “When we were in DB custody, we were offered a proposal to sit with the Prime Minister for discussions. However, we rejected the proposal by going on a hunger strike in DB custody for our release.”

In a video message on Friday, Abdul Hannan Masud, another coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, announced a nationwide protest rally on Saturday.

“From Sunday (August 4), we will call for a full-scale non-cooperation movement,” Abdul Hannan Masud also announced.
