C T Online Desk: A man has been killed in Shonir Akhra where protesters were engaged in intermittent clashes with the police since Wednesday evening.
The deceased was identified as Siam, 18, Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police camp, confirmed this information.
Siam was killed while returning home from his work on Thursday night.
Shonir Akhra area in Jatrabari turned into a battlefield following clashes of police and protesters in multiple phases.
At least 8 protesters and two policemen were injured in the clash.
Multiple motorcycles, toll plaza booths on the adjacent Hanif Flyover and a police box have been set on fire and vandalized.
Tyres and wood logs could also be seen burning on Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
Till filing this report at 12:20am, the protesters were staging demonstration blocking the road.
They have occupied the highway since morning. The road is under their control from 10am.
Hundreds of protestors have taken positions from Shonir Akhara to Signboard area.
Jatrabari Police inspector (investigation) told reporters: “Local BNP-Jamaat people blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway using the students as shields. They were dispersed in the evening.”
He claimed that he did not know whether anyone was injured in the police firing.
Assistant Police Commissioner of Demra Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Traffic Police Tanzil Ahmed said that the police are trying to bring the situation under control.
Tension escalated in various parts of Dhaka on Wednesday as 55 individuals, including journalists, police officers, students, and bystanders, were injured and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment amidst protests demanding quota reform.
Police, along with members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), were deployed to the scene.
Members of the Awami League and Jubo League joined forces with the police to push back the demonstrators. Reports indicate that four people have been shot in connection with the incident so far.
The atmosphere in the area remains tense. Protesters have taken positions near Shonir Akhra, while members of the Jubo League, Chhatra League, and police maintain a heavy presence.
