Mitu Murder Case : Deposition recording deferred, former SP Babul falls sick

C T Online Desk: The recording of the deposition in the sensational murder case of ex-SP Babul Akter’s wife, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, was deferred due to the absence of witnesses on Monday.

The accused, Babul, also fell sick after the proceedings in the courtroom.

The incident took place at the court of Chattogram Third Additional Metropolitan Session Judge Md Jashim Uddin at around 2:30 pm.

Nesar Ahmed, the court bench assistant, said police brought Babul to the court from Feni District Jail at around 10:00 am to record his deposition in the Mitu murder case.

But the prescheduled witnesses didn’t appear. Then, the court deferred the date to 15 May, Nesar said.

Babul, who has been suffering from fever, also felt sick in the courtroom and was later taken back to the Feni District Jail, he added.

Mentionable, the PBI submitted a charge sheet accusing seven persons, including Babul, in the case on 13 September 2022, and deposition recording in the case is now going on at the court.

In the charge sheet, the accused also included Md Kamrul Islam Sikder alias Musa, Ehteshamul Hoque Bhola, Md Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, Md Anwar Hossain, Md Khairul Islam alias Kalu, and Shahjahan Mian.

Of them, Musa and Kalu have remained absconding since the incident, while four other accused Saidul Islam Shikder alias Sakku, Nurunnabi, Md Rashed and Abu Naser were dropped from the charge sheet.

Among them, Rashed and Nurunnabi were killed in ‘crossfire’ with police days after the incident.

The investigators revealed that Babul carried out the killing, engaging some criminals following an extramarital affair with a woman working at an international non-government oganisation in Cox’s Bazar.

A family feud with his wife over the affair led to the killing. Babul planned and financed the killing. He hired the killers for Tk 3 lakh through his informant, who read the charge sheet.

Earlier, the PBI submitted its final report in the case filed by the victim Mitu’s father on 25 January last year.

Her father Mosharraf Hossain made eight people, including Babul, accused in the case.

A total of two cases were filed in connection with the murder, and a court ordered the reinvestigation of the case filed by Babul in this connection, rejecting a final report earlier.

Another court on 9 January of last year ordered to show Babul arrested in the case filed by him.

Miscreants chopped and shot Mitu to death while she was escorting her son to his school bus at the city’s GEC intersection, near her residence at OR Nizam Road, at around 6:30 am on 5 June 2016.

The PIB got an order for investigating the case in January 2020 and gave breakthrough arresting the plaintiff as prime accused.
