C T Online Desk: The CUET students have been on the streets since the death of their fellow students.
The Greater Chattogram Public Transport Owners-Workers Okiya Parishad calls for a 48-hour strike from Sunday, demanding the release of the arrested bus driver amid protests over the deaths of two students in a bus accident.
They announced the strike in five districts– Chattogram, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar– following a meeting at their office in the city’s BRTC Market on Saturday afternoon.
Bus driver Tajul Islam was arrested on Wednesday following a collision with a motorbike in Chattogram’s Rangunia Upazila on Monday, which claimed the lives of two Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) students and injured another.
“The strike will be observed from 6:00 am on Sunday,” Mohammad Musa, Member Secretary of the association told the Daily Sun.
All types of public transport including bus, minibus, tempo and auto-rickshaw will remain off the road during the strike.
“However, the private vehicles will stay out of the strike purview”, he added.
They also demanded an end to the ‘harassment’ of their fellow transport workers by the protesting students on the Chattogram-Kaptai Road.
The CUET students have been on the streets since the death of their fellow students demanding punishment to the bus driver.
To control the situation, the university authority closed academic activities sine die and asked the students to vacate dormitories on Thursday.
On Friday, the authority reviewed the decision and allowed the students to stay in the dormitories.
