Faulty structure turns Kuril flyover vulnerable

C T Online Desk: Kuril flyover connecting airport and other important roads together in the heart of the capital city Dhaka has become dilapidated owing to ‘faulty structure’.

Durability of the flyover was estimated at 80 years but it has been risky for movement of vehicles and passengers within 10 years of construction.

Sources claimed that lack of proper infrastructural maintenance has aggravated the situation.

The flyover reportedly jerks if and when goods-laden trucks and vehicles make movement from Khilkhet to 300-feet road at Kuril via it.

Md Ishaque, chief engineer of Roads and Highways Department, said it should be examined as to whether the flyover has any fault, adding that overload may cause such jerking.

The flyover was constructed at the junction of the airport road and Pragatisarani road to develop communications of the capital city.

Constructed at Tk 306 crore in 2013, the 3.1 km flyover has connected other parts of Dhaka to the new city Purbachal apart from reducing traffic jam on the adjacent roads.

Prof Md Shamsul Hoque of Civil Engineering Department of the BUET said responsibility of the authorities is not confined to the construction of a structure which requires continuous monitoring and maintenance.

Assessing risk of a structure is not a difficult task because it can be done using device followed by measures, if found faulty, he added.

The flyover is comprised of four loops, three Y-loops and two U-loops and 10 roads of which three located near 300-feet road causing vulnerability.

Architect Iqbal Habib said the flyover is suffering from faulty structure and inadequate maintenance.

He spoke on the need for an expert committee and measures based on its recommendations.
