Another accused gets bail in Rahima abduction case

C T Online Desk: Helal Sharif, one of the accused in Khulna’s controversial Rahima Begum abduction case, has got out on bail.

He walked out of jail after 36 days on Thursday.

The Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court granted Helal Sharif’s bail on Thursday, informed his lawyer Saiful Islam. He was released at 6:30pm after the court order, he said.

“If the conspirators, including the litigants Rahima and Moriom, are not immediately brought under the book and exemplary punishment is applied, people will be encouraged to indulge in such crimes,” said Helal Sharif after being released.

People from all over the area welcomed Helal Sharif with garlands from the jail gate. Helal Sharif was arrested on August 30 and was sent to jail.

Earlier, on October 3, the other four accused in this case, Golam Kibria, Mohiuddin, Rafiqul Islam Palash, and Md Jewel, got bail. They were arrested on September 4 and sent to jail.

Rahima’s husband, Bellal Ghatak alias Belal Howladar, who was arrested on September 12, is still in jail.

On August 27, Rahima allegedly went missing while fetching water near her home in the Banikpara area.

Her children reportedly found her sandals, scarf and the pitcher she was carrying from the spot and reported the incident to the police.

Police initially suspected that she had left her home due to some family dispute over land.

The entire incident got diverted when her daughter Moriom Mannan claimed to have traced her dead body on September 22.

However, the police rescued her from a house in Faridpur on September 24.

Golam Kibria, Mohiuddin, Rafiqul Islam Palash, Md Jewel, Helal Sharif and Rahima’s husband Bellal Ghatak were arrested over the incident.
