Uttara crane accident: 10 sued for negligent homicide

C T Online Desk: A Dhaka court has accepted a case filed against 10 people for negligent homicide over the deaths of five people after a girder of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project fell on their car in Dhaka’s Uttara area on August 15.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Ahammed passed the order after Shahida Khanam, wife of deceased Ayub Hossain Rubel, filed the case on Sunday.

The court directed the OC of Uttara west police station to investigate the case and submit a report, said Rakib Chowdhury, bench assistant of the court.

The accused in the case are owner of heavy equipment supplier company IFSCON Bangladesh Limited Iftekhar Hossain and Head of Operations Md Azharul Islam Mithu, China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) Procurement Engineer Manjurul Islam, Safety Engineer Zulfikar Ali Shah, crane driver Al Amin Hossain alias Hridoy, helper Rakib Hossain, Iftekhar Hossain, Tofazzal Hossain Tushar, Rubel, Afroj Mia and Ruhul Amin Mridha.

According to the case documents, the accident took place on Jashimuddin Road in Uttara at around 4:30pm on August 15, leaving five people dead. Zulfikar Ali Shah, the company’s safety engineer, never took necessary steps to create the required safety zone for the crane operation.

The statement further said that the crane driver Al Amin was making the helper Rakib operate the crane instead of doing it himself. Moreover, they fled the scene when the accident took place instead of cooperating in the rescue.

On August 19, the same court remanded 10 people on different terms in another case lodged over the deaths.

PPolice produced crane operator Hridoy, his helper Rakib and safety engineer Zulfikar before the court and pleaded to place them on a 10-day remand. After hearing the plea, the court placed the three accused on four-day remand each.

The court also placed security guards Rubel, 28, Md Afroj Miah, 50, owner of heavy equipment supplier company–IFSCON Bangladesh Limited– Md Iftekhar Hossain, 39, its Head of Operations Md Azharul Islam Mithu, 45, crane supplying company–Build Trade’s–Marketing Manager Tofazzal Hossain Tusher, 42, admin officers Ruhul Amin Mridha, 33, and Md Monjurul Islam, 29, on two-day remand each.

Teams of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested them in separate drives from Dhaka, Gazipur, Sirajganj and Bagerhat on August 17.
