C T Online Desk: Bangladesh made a unique record in Test cricket history as the Tigers managed to produce the highest team total (365) after registering as many as six ducks in their first innings, against Sri Lanka in their second Test match at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Tuesday.
The previous highest score in an innings in Tests with six ducks was scored by India (152) against England at Old Trafford back in 2014.
It is worth mentioning, no team so far registered more than six ducks in 2,463 Tests till date.
Tigers’ total of 365 is even the highest total by any team in first-class cricket as well where six or more batters got out for a duck.
There have been 308 instances of six or more ducks in a first-class innings, including this one in the ongoing Test.
The previous highest was 300 by Sussex against Derbyshire in 2021.
Tigers’ stunning fightback was based on Mushfiqur Rahim’s unbeaten 175 and Liton Das’ 141.
Apart from Mushfiq and Liton only three other batsmen – Nazmul Hossain Shanto (eight), Mominul Haque (nine) and Taijul Islam (15) – managed to open their account in Bangladesh’s first innings.
While Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib al Hasan, Mosaddek Hossain, Khaled Ahmed and Ebadat Hossain were all dismissed for nought.
Prior to this match, there were five incidents in Tests where six batsmen got out for ducks in an innings.
And among those five teams, Bangladesh once suffered that fate.
As many as six Bangladeshi batsmen got out for ducks when they were bowled out for 87 against the West Indies in 2002 in Dhaka.
The first time any team scored six ducks in an innings was in 1980 when hosts Pakistan faced the ignominy against the Windies.
South Africa repeated the feat against India back in 1996 in Ahmedabad before Bangladesh’s aforementioned Test against the Windies.
And after India’s 2014 debacle New Zealand had the unwanted record against Pakistan in Dubai in 2018.
Bangladesh again had six ducks in an innings in the ongoing Test.
And with that, Bangladesh are the only team in Test history so far who suffered six ducks in an innings twice.
