Tax Commissioner jailed in dowry case

C T Online Desk: The court has sent Rajiv Rana Mallick, 43, an assistant tax commissioner to jail in a dowry case filed by his wife in the Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. On Tuesday (May 18) at noon, Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Deb ordered the court to send him to jail. Rajiv Rana Mallick, 43, is currently working as Assistant Tax Commissioner, Income Tax Department, Dhaka Tax Zone-14. He is the son of late Ranjit Mallick Babul of Mallick Bari in Gunagari area of ​​Banshkhali police station. According to court and case documents, on July 8, 2010, he got married to Rajib Rana Mallik, son of late Ranjit Mallik Babul of Mallik Bari in Gunagari area of ​​Banshkhali Police Station and Priya Muhuri Mallik, daughter of late Rabindra Lal Muhuri of the same area. Priya is a government primary school teacher by profession. Shortly after the marriage, the wife found out that her husband Rajiv was addicted to drugs. Speaking of urgent need, he (Rajiv) demanded a dowry of Rs 5 lakh from his wife. When he was told that it was not possible for his wife to pay the dowry, Rajiv started torturing her physically and mentally and kicked her out of the house. Priya Muhuri filed a case under the Dowry Act in the court on March 8 after she was again pressured for Tk 5 lakh on March 4. Plaintiff’s lawyer Shubhashish Sharma told banglanews that his wife Priya Muhuri Mallick filed a case against the accused Assistant Tax Commissioner Rajib Rana Mallick in the court on March 8 for demanding dowry of Tk 5 lakh from his wife. Later, the court issued summons against the officer. Rajib appeared in court on Tuesday (May 18) and applied for bail. After hearing both the parties, the court rejected Rajib’s bail application and ordered him to be sent to jail.
