Mathews ton puts SL in vantage position at stumps, day 1

C T Online Desk: Sri Lanka’s experienced campaigner Angelo Mathew scored yet another hundred to put his side on a vantage position as visitors ended the first day of their first test match against hosts Bangladesh on 258-4 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium in Chittagong on Sunday.

Matthews was not out on 114 and with another overnight batter Dinesh Chandimal, who was on 34, added 75 in their unbeaten partnership to end the day on a high note.

Kusal Mendis, who added 92 runs in third wicket stand with Matthews, also picked up half century and scored 54 before losing his wicket in the first of post tea session off Taijul Islam.

Earlier, Bangladesh off-spinner Nayeem Hasan brought two early breakthroughs for Tigers as he took the wickets of both Sri Lanka openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Oshada Fernando in the first session.

Karunaratne was trapped leg before wicket during eighth over after scoring nine runs. Fernando scored 36 off 76 balls before get caught by wicketkeeper Liton Das during 22nd over.

Earlier, Sri Lanka captain Karunaratne won the toss and elected to bat first.

Shakib al Hasan has returned as he missed last two Test series due to family reasons. Notable omission from the playing eleven is right-arm pacer Ebadot Hossain as Bangladesh opted for Khaled Ahmed and Shoriful Islam for their two-man pace attack.
