C T Online Desk: Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) wants to collect tax from privately owned and private companies in the light of suspended five-year tax re-assessment. To this end, the institution has proposed to the Ministry of Local Government to withdraw the suspension order given in 2017. . In that case, the taxpayers also announced to join the movement.
AJM Nasir Uddin was the Mayor during the re-evaluation of municipal tax in 2017. In other words, the current mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury wants to collect the tax fixed during his tenure. However, four months after the incumbent mayor took office, on June 3, 2020, CCC sent a letter to the ministry asking for the suspension to be lifted. In the same letter, there was also a proposal to cancel the suspended re-evaluation and conduct a new assessment.
The letter, signed by CCC’s chief executive officer Mohammad Shahidul Alam, said city corporations have been given the authority to re-evaluate housing tax for five consecutive years. According to this rule, public and private holding (establishment) tax is revalued in FY 2017-18. However, it was postponed due to obstructions from various quarters and under the direction of the local government department.
