Two people, including a madrasa teacher, were killed and at least 20 others injured when a bus carrying students, teachers and guardians overturned in Satkania upazila of Chattogram early Saturday while heading to Cox’s Bazar on an educational tour.
The deceased were identified as Sohana Afroze, 45, a lecturer in the Economics Department of Bakshimool Sunnia Islamia Madrasa in Burichang upazila of Cumilla, and Sakhawat Hossain, 56, husband of Nadera Afroze, a lecturer in the madrasa’s Bangla Department.
Sources said, more than 100 students, teachers, staff members and guardians left the madrasa in two buses around 10pm on Friday for Cox’s Bazar.
Around 4am, the bus travelling behind reached the Keranihat area and lost control before plunging into a roadside ditch on the western side of the highway.
Around 50 people were on board the bus at the time of the accident.
Local residents, firefighters and police rescued the injured and sent them to different hospitals in the upazila. Doctors at the emergency departments declared two of them dead.
Dohazari Highway Police Station Officer-In-Charge Mohammad Nurul Absar, told Commercial Times that preliminary findings suggested that speeding and the driver’s drowsiness might have caused the accident.
“The bodies of the two victims and the wrecked bus are currently in police custody. Legal action will be taken over the incident,” he said.
