Cristiano Ronaldo has retired from international football, ending a record-shattering career with Portugal at the age of 41.
In a lengthy video posted on his Instagram account on Thursday, Ronaldo read out a letter to supporters announcing his departure from the international game. “The time has come to return the number 7 shirt of the national team,” he said, referring to his iconic jersey number.
“I never thought the shirt belonged to me alone. But for 23 years, I have had the privilege and the responsibility of wearing it,” he said.
Ronaldo made a record 234 appearances for Portugal and is the all-time leading scorer in international football, with 146 goals. With those two landmarks, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner closed a storied chapter in the national colours.
