Five people were killed and at least eight others injured after a truck ran over passengers standing beside a stranded bus on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram early Tuesday.

The accident occurred at around 1:10 am on Tuesday at the Royal Cement Gate area in Chhoto Kumira. The deceased included a child, three women and a man.

At least eight injured people were admitted to hospital. Several of them were reportedly in critical condition.

Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, a firefighter at the Kumira Fire Service Station, said a passenger bus travelling from Chattogram to Dhaka had stopped by the roadside due to a mechanical problem.

While the bus was being repaired, passengers got off and stood beside the highway. At that time, a Dhaka-bound truck ran over them, he said.

Three people died on the spot, while two others were taken to hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
