Lighter vessel sinks in Karnaphuli River, 12 crew rescued

C T Online Desk: A stone-laden lighter vessel sank in the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram late on Tuesday, prompting a rescue operation in which all 12 people on board were brought to safety.

The vessel named ‘MV Bay Harbour-2’ went down at around 5:30pm near Buoy No. 5 in the Karnaphuli Channel.

The Bangladesh Coast Guard said its personnel launched an immediate rescue operation after receiving reports of the incident.

Eight people were rescued initially, followed by four more, bringing the total number of survivors to 12.

The lighter vessel was carrying a cargo of stone from Chattogram to Dhaka when the accident occurred.

Chattogram Port Secretary Md Nasir Uddin said the vessel, owned by Bay Harbour Limited, remains partially submerged.

The cause of the incident has yet to be determined. However, port authorities said the Karnaphuli shipping channel remains safe for navigation.
