C T Online Desk: May 25, 2026- Sacrificial animals from across the country is pouring into the cattle markets in the port city and its adjoining 14 upazillas of the district ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
Authorities have taken tight security measures by engaging members of the police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Ansars, alongside plainclothes law enforcement personnel inside and outside the cattle markets as well as city entry points to ensure safety for traders and cattle.
Commissioner of Chattogram Police (CMP) Hasan Mohammad Shoukat Ali recently stated in a meeting that the cattle markets in the port city will be monitored in various ways to ensure safety for the cattle traders and their cattle.
He mentioned that multiple security arrangements have been made for city cattle markets. The latest addition to this is the use of drones for monitoring activities. Besides, fake note detection devices will be available in every cattle market to identify counterfeit notes, he said.
Talking to BSS, a number of cattle traders expressed satisfaction with the security measures taken ahead of Eid by the authorities to ensure their safety.
Sakib Hossain from Banskhali at the city’s Bibirhat Bazar and Md Selim Bepary from Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar at Sagarika Bazar here both stated that they did not pay extortion on their way to the market or at the market venue.
During visits to several traditional, makeshift cattle markets and a few mini markets in the port city, it was observed that cattle heads began arriving in good numbers and the selling and buying process gain momentum.
Traders and market sources have anticipated that prices of sacrificial animals will be slightly higher this year compared to previous years.
Abdul Goni at Bibirhat Bazar who came from Kushtia district told BSS that he brought 25 large size cows to the Chattogram market for sale but did not have to pay any toll.
There are ten cattle markets including eight temporary ones under the supervision of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC).
Selling and buying of sacrificial animals have already gained momentum at the temporary markets from Friday and will continue until midnight on May 28.
Md Masud Alam, Superintendent of Chattogram district police also mentioned that they have taken adequate security measures to prevent crimes in and around the cattle markets.
Nearly 160 RAB personnel have been deployed in various cattle markets, strategic points in the city as well as highways for the safety and security of traders and buyers, RAB, sources said.
