C T Online Desk: April 11, 2026- Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain today said colorectal cancer is a preventable disease with a recovery rate of around 90 percent if detected early.
He underscored the need for raising public awareness and ensuring regular screening while addressing a press conference at the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) conference room, marking the conclusion of the ‘Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month’ for March 2026.
Dr. Shahadat said March is observed globally as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout March, various awareness programmes and screening activities were carried out in Chattogram city under the theme “Early detection of cancer saves lives”.
The initiatives were jointly implemented by Chattogram City Corporation, CSCR Hospital and PGS Academia. He said the “Blue March” lighting campaign at key city installations drew public attention and symbolised colorectal cancer awareness.
The mayor said extensive campaigns were conducted through print, online and electronic media, marking a significant milestone in public health initiatives by a city corporation in the country.
He added that discounts of up to 50 percent on essential tests at CSCR Hospital, including colonoscopy and stool occult blood tests, encouraged wider participation. A total of 2,157 patients were registered, of whom 1,749 received free medical advice and 813 benefited from discounted tests.
Dr. Shahadat stressed that lack of awareness often leads to late diagnosis and complications, urging citizens to prioritise regular health check-ups. He said the initiative aims to promote early detection and will continue through regular awareness programmes.
The function was also attended by CCC Chief Executive Officer and Secretary Mohammad Ashraful Amin, CSCR (Pvt) Ltd Chairman Dr Khurshid Jamil Chowdhury, Managing Director Dr Morshedul Karim Chowdhury, PGS Academia Chairman Professor Dr Khandaker A K Azad, CHSIC Chief Health Officer Dr Imam Hossain Rana, CSCR Diagnostic Director Professor Dr M A Kashem, PGS Academia General Secretary Dr Md Ahsanul Abedin, PGS Academia Consultant Dr Saiful Islam Raju and CSCR CEO Dr Salauddin Mahmud.
