Legal steps will be taken over killing of police before and after 5 Aug 2024: IGP

C T Online Desk: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir on Friday afternoon said law will take its course over every single incident involving the killings of police personnel and others before and after 5 August 2024.

Many police members were killed at the time, he noted.

The police chief made the remark in response to a question raised by a reporter in this regard at a briefing held at Rajshahi Metropolitan Police headquarters.

On Tuesday, a special parliamentary committee gave the green light to an indemnity ordinance that was promulgated during the interim government’s tenure to give legal protection to the July Uprising participants.

The ordinance still awaits a review at the parliament before becoming a bill, though.

There is also unclarity over the period to be covered by the potential bill. The July Uprising ended with the fall of the Awami League regime by noon on 5 August 2024, but revenge violence continued for a few more days against the people linked to the regime and police personnel.

Caution against road blockades

He also raised concerns over frequent road blockades by different youth groups during the interim government’s tenure. The practice hurts everyone, he noted adding everyone must obey the law to build a peaceful and civilized country.

He also noted that the youth are facing a dire crisis: many are remaining unemployed despite completing education. As a result, many are getting involved in mugging and narcotics, Ali Hossain Fakir noted.

Police are now on a “non-compromising footing” against the narcotics crisis, he added.
