C T Online Desk: Sarwar Jahan Jewel Mymensingh : Accusations of embezzlement of crores of taka in Trishal mosque development project: ACC raids five months after news broke
A four-member team from the ACC’s Mymensingh Integrated District Office conducted the raid on Wednesday (January 7) afternoon on the orders of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) head office on allegations of embezzlement of crores of taka in a mosque development project established in the name of former MP Ruhul Amin Madani in Trishal Upazila of Mymensingh.
During the operation, ACC officials visited the Trishal Upazila Engineering Department and the project-related areas. During this time, they collected and verified various documents related to project approval, allocation, bill collection and actual work progress.
ACC sources said that although allocations were taken for the development of the same mosque under three different names in two fiscal years, there were widespread discrepancies between the actual work and the information in the documents. Initial verification revealed serious discrepancies in the project approval process.
Mymensingh Integrated District Office ACC Assistant Director Raju Mohammad Sarwar Hossain said, “After the initial investigation, the necessary documents have been collected. If any evidence of fraud or embezzlement is found after verification, legal action will be taken.”
It is worth noting that the matter was first reported by various media outlets in July last year. The report revealed that although nearly one crore taka was allocated under three projects in the fiscal years 2022-23 and 2023-24, one project has not been completed at all, one is partially completed and is closed, and another project has only been shown to be fully completed by installing a nameplate.
Local residents are hoping that the ACC’s operation will uncover the true picture of the irregularities discussed and take effective action against those responsible.
