C T Online Desk: US special forces have abducted and brought Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to New York State to try him in a drug case, initiating President Donald Trump’s stated plan to run the oil-rich country.
US media reports have confirmed that the American plane carrying Maduro has landed in New York, and that he will face the court next week.
After conducting large-scale strikes, US officials will now run affairs in Venezuela until they can arrange a “safe and judicious” transition of power, President Donald Trump said in a presser on Saturday.
American companies are on their way to taking over the world’s biggest oil reserve, Trump added.
Nonetheless, the US still does not have effective control over the country where Maduro’s political party remains highly influential as well as, to a certain degree, popular. The party-run government also remains fully operational, while the stand-in leader, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, has aired defiance.
Trump said that sending US troops in could be an option to establish control.
