Khaleda Zia to be laid to rest beside husband Ziaur Rahman’s grave

C T Online Desk: Dec 31, 2025- BNP Chairperson and three-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, widely regarded as an uncompromising leader for democracy in Bangladesh, will be laid to eternal rest beside her husband Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman’s grave in the city following her namaz-e-janaza today.

The janaza will be held at the Manik Mia Avenue around 2pm after Johr prayers, BNP sources said.

The body of pro-democracy leader and country’s first female prime minister is now taken to her son Tarique Rahman’s residence in capital’s Gulshan to allow family members and relatives to pay their last tributes to her.

The national flag-wrapped mortuary van carried her body to the residence next to her own residence Firoza with state protocol around 09:15 am.

Tarique Rahman and other family members recited from the holy Quran and offered prayer for eternal peace of the departed soul as the body reached the abode for the last time.

The mortuary van departed from the Evercare Hospital here at 8:53 am for Tarique Rahman’s residence amid tight security as ten thousands members of law enforcement agencies have been deployed to ensure full-proof security in the city centering her janaza and burial.

Since the dawn, a huge section of people and leaders and workers of BNP, started gathering in front of her residence to have a last glimpse of their leader.

Security forces and all concerned state agencies have taken all necessary preparations to ensure that people from all walks of life can pay their last tributes to the national leader and participate in the janaza without hindrance.

Necessary arrangements have been taken so that people can stand along the surrounding roads of Manik Mia Avenue.

After the janaza, Begum Khaleda Zia will be laid to eternal rest with state honour beside Shaheed President and valiant freedom fighter Ziaur Rahman’s grave around 3:30 pm.

Family members of Begum Khaleda Zia, important state dignitaries, responsible officials of the government, foreign guests, ambassadors and BNP-nominated political leaders will be present during the burial.

For the smooth completion of the burial, entry will be restricted to designated persons only. Public movement in Zia Udyan at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city will remain limited until the burial process is completed.

A deep pall of gloom swept across the nation following the death of Begum Zia.
